๐Ÿ‘› Wallet Guide

Set up your first crypto wallet

A wallet is like a bank account for crypto โ€” it's where your coins live.
Follow these steps and you'll be set up in 10 minutes.

1
Choose your wallet

There are many wallet apps, but we recommend starting with one of these two. Both are free, trusted by millions, and work on phones and computers.

๐ŸฆŠ

MetaMask

Best for Ethereum and most tokens. Works as a browser extension or phone app.

๐Ÿ”ต

Coinbase Wallet

Very beginner-friendly. Made by Coinbase (a big, trusted company). Great mobile app.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: If you're unsure, start with Coinbase Wallet โ€” it's the most beginner-friendly option. You can always add MetaMask later.
2
Download the app

Go to the official app store on your phone (Apple App Store or Google Play Store) and search for your chosen wallet.

For MetaMask: Search "MetaMask" โ€” look for the fox logo ๐ŸฆŠ

For Coinbase Wallet: Search "Coinbase Wallet" (not just "Coinbase" โ€” that's a different app!) โ€” look for the blue circle ๐Ÿ”ต

โš ๏ธ Important: Only download from the official app store. Never download a wallet from a random website or link someone sends you. That's how people get scammed.
3
Create a new wallet

Open the app and tap "Create a new wallet" (not "Import" โ€” that's for people who already have one).

You'll need to set up a password. Use a strong one you haven't used elsewhere.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: This password only locks the app on your phone. Your actual wallet is protected by something called a "seed phrase" โ€” that comes next, and it's the most important part.
4
Write down your seed phrase

The app will show you 12 (or 24) random words. This is your "seed phrase" โ€” think of it as the master key to your wallet.

Write these words down on paper. Yes, actual paper. In order. Store it somewhere safe, like you would a passport.

๐Ÿšจ Critical: If you lose your seed phrase, you lose access to your money forever. No one can recover it โ€” not the wallet company, not the police, no one. Write it down physically and keep it safe.

โœ… Do This

  • Write it on paper
  • Store in a safe place
  • Keep a backup copy
  • Double-check the words

โŒ Never Do This

  • Screenshot it
  • Save in notes app
  • Email it to yourself
  • Share with anyone
5
Verify your seed phrase

The app will ask you to confirm some of the words from your seed phrase. This is to make sure you wrote them down correctly.

Tap the words in the correct order. If you get stuck, check your written copy.

6
You're done! ๐ŸŽ‰

That's it. You now have a crypto wallet. You'll see your wallet address โ€” it looks like a long string of letters and numbers (like 0x1a2B...3c4D).

This address is like your email address for crypto. You can share it with anyone who wants to send you coins. It's totally safe to share โ€” no one can steal from you with just your address.

๐ŸŽฏ Next step: Head over to our Security Guide to learn how to keep your wallet safe, or try our Interactive Demo to practice sending and receiving crypto.

๐Ÿ”’ Security Basics

Keep your crypto safe

Before you buy a single coin, learn how to not lose it.
These rules are simple but non-negotiable.

๐Ÿ”‘

Your Seed Phrase is Everything

Your seed phrase (those 12 or 24 words) is the only way to access your wallet. Think of it as the PIN + the bank vault key + the security guard all in one.

If someone gets your seed phrase, they own your money. It's that simple.

โœ… Do

  • Write it on paper
  • Store in a fireproof safe
  • Make a backup at a second location

โŒ Don't

  • Store it digitally (phone, cloud, email)
  • Take a photo of it
  • Tell anyone โ€” not even "support"
๐Ÿ“ฑ

Turn on Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

What is 2FA? It's a second password that changes every 30 seconds. Even if someone steals your regular password, they can't get in without this code.

Most crypto apps support 2FA. Use an authenticator app like Google Authenticator or Authy.

How to set it up:

  • Go to your account's security settings
  • Look for "Two-Factor Authentication" or "2FA"
  • Scan the QR code with your authenticator app
  • Save the backup codes they give you (on paper!)
๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Avoid SMS-based 2FA (text messages). Hackers can hijack your phone number. App-based 2FA is much safer.
๐ŸŽฃ

Common Scams to Avoid

Crypto scammers are creative. Here are the most common tricks they use:

  • "Send me 1 Bitcoin and I'll send you 2 back" โ€” No one does this. Ever. Not even Elon Musk.
  • "Your wallet has been compromised, enter your seed phrase here" โ€” No legitimate service will ever ask for your seed phrase.
  • "Guaranteed 100% returns" โ€” If it sounds too good to be true, it is. Always.
  • Fake wallet apps โ€” Only download wallets from official app stores. Check the developer name.
  • "I'm from support, I need remote access" โ€” Real support teams never ask you to install remote desktop software.
๐ŸŒ

Safe Browsing Habits

Your computer and phone are the front door to your crypto. Keep them locked:

  • Bookmark official sites โ€” Always use your bookmarks to visit crypto sites, never click email links
  • Check the URL carefully โ€” Scammers create sites that look identical but have slightly different URLs (like "metamask" vs "metamaask")
  • Use a password manager โ€” Tools like 1Password or Bitwarden create and store strong unique passwords
  • Keep your software updated โ€” Updates often fix security holes that hackers exploit
  • Don't use public WiFi for crypto โ€” Coffee shop WiFi is not secure. Use your phone's data instead.
๐ŸงŠ

The Golden Rule

Never invest more than you can afford to lose completely. Crypto is volatile โ€” prices can drop 50% in a week. Start small. Learn first. Only use money you'd be okay losing.
